Why Don’t They Sell Pampers in Australia?

Published by rozandrews at 6:19 pm under Babies in Australia Edit This

I really don’t understand why they don’t sell Pampers nappies (or diapers) in Australia. When my daughter was a baby, I used Pampers all the time. I found that it was the only brand that could be relied upon never to leak, even if it was used overnight.

When my baby son was born in Australia, I expected that I would be able to buy and use Pampers, as it is a worldwide brand, right? Wrong! Pampers are not on sale in Australia. Huggies seem to be the only worldwide brand available, but, as most mums I have talked to agree, Huggies are terrible. They are not very absorbent and so lead to nappy rash and they also leak very quickly, even if they have only been on for an hour or so.

I tried other brands that are on sale here, including Baby Love, which is made in Australia, before starting to buy Woolworths Select nappies regularly. I found that they were of reasonable quality, more absorbent than other brands, and only occasionally leaked when used overnight.

However, in the last two packets of Woolworths Select nappies, a few of the nappies were not made properly, so I could not use them. I rang up Woolworths customer services and they were very apologetic. They offered me a refund of the cost of a whole packet of nappies, so I am happy with that and will probably continue to use them.

Going back to Pampers, I had a look on the Internet to try and find out if they were available anywhere in Australia. I found out that they were on sale in selected Coles supermarkets in the state of Victoria in early 2008. It sounded as if it was a trial to see if they sold well in Australia. However, I wasn’t able to find out any more recent information and they were not in my local Coles store the last time I looked in the baby aisle. I hope that they will be introduced before my son is toilet trained – now that’s something to look forward to!
