Informing the Australian Immigration Office of New/Renewed Passports

If you are living in Australia on a temporary visa, such as a 457 visa, it is important that you visit the immigration office in person if you obtain a new passport during your stay in Australia.

The Department of Immigration needs to see your new passport (and possibly also your old passport) in order to update their records and put a visa stamp in your new passport.

If you have a baby whilst you are living in Australia on a temporary visa, you should inform the immigration office of the addition to the family as soon as possible after the baby’s arrival. Once you have a passport for the baby, you need to visit the immigration office with your baby and his or her passport.

If you, your spouse, your child or another family member renew a passport or replace a lost or stolen passport, the same rule applies. The person(s) in question need(s) to visit the immigration office with their new passports.

If you don’t do this, it could present problems if you either renew your visa in future or apply for a different visa or permanent residency.

That is the reason why I need to visit the immigration office with my son and daughter this week. My one-year old son now has a British passport and we renewed my daugther’s passport at the same time, so they both need their immigration records to be updated and to receive visa stamps in their new passports.
