A Heatwave in January

The height of summer has truly arrived in Sydney. Yesterday (Wednesday, January 14th), it was unbearably hot with temperatures reaching 40 degrees C. Today, temperatures are expected to climb even higher!

According to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, there were nine bush fires in the state of New South Wales yesterday, including one near the north Sydney suburb of Killara.

In such high temperatures, the best thing to do is to stay indoors, preferably in an air conditioned room. If you go outside, it is more important than ever to liberally apply factor 30+ sunscreen and wear a sunhat and sunglasses. When I went out at 4.30pm yesterday, it was still very hot and, although I was wearing sunscreen, the heat of the sun’s rays felt like flickering flames on my arms.

My husband came home with a fan which had been thrown out into the street. We weren’t sure if it would work, but, when we switched it on, it started to spin around. I don’t know why someone would throw it out - it doesn’t even look old. It’s yet another of our fantastic finds in Australia!

I found it very hard to concentrate on my work yesterday. The heat seemed to fry my brain but the addition of the fan has helped today.

It was still hot at 10pm when we had our exercise session. The new fan helped to cool us down a little but exercise was at a slower pace than normal!

It looks like the extreme heat will continue until Friday, when the temperatures are expected to fall a little.
